Workshops, Classes and Events

March Yarns provides classes and workshops (see below for monthly listings) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Classes

 

SPINNING

Learn to Spin over 3 weeks

Friday mornings 10am – 12pm 

March 13th, March 20th and March 27th

or

Saturday afternoons 1pm – 3pm 

June 13th, June 20th and June 27th

Cost: $90 includes roving. Bring your own wheel or arrange to borrow one for the lessons to learn on.

 

KNITTING

Learn to knit socks over 3 weeks

This class is for people who can knit (the basics) and would like to learn to knit socks. This class will not teach you to knit but is suitable for beginner sock knitters.

Saturday afternoons 1pm – 3pm  

May 2nd, May 9th, May 16th

Cost: $85 plus supplies (100gm sock yarn & 2.25 double pointed needles)

or

Friday mornings 10am - 12pm  

May 29th, June 5th and June 12th

Cost: $85 (100gm sock yarn & 2.25 double pointed needles)

 

Advanced socks – Fairisle/Stranded colourwork socks over 2 weeks

This class is for people who have already knitted socks and would like to learn a new technique. This is not a beginner class on how to knit a sock.

Saturday mornings 10am – 1pm 

June 6th  and June 13th

Cost: $85. Supplies (needles, yarn) are not included.. You will also need to select a pattern in advance from some suggested options and purchase (if required) and print the pattern (to preserve copyright) and bring it to the class. Printing can be arranged by the shop if this is an obstacle.

ABSOLUTE BEGINNER – LEARN TO KNIT over 2 weeks

Monday evenings 6:30pm – 9:00pm  

Week 1 - May 18th learn to cast on, holding yarn and needles, garter stitch

Week 2 – May 25th – knit a simple dishcloth using garter and stocking stitch

Cost $60 including supplies

 

BEGINNER  – Learn to Knit a Beanie over 2 weeks

This class is for a basic knitter who'd like to learn to read a pattern and knit a simple item in a group setting.

Monday evenings 6:30pm – 9:00pm  

Week 1 – June 1st – knit a small beanie (flat) – learn basic rib and decreasing

Week 2 – June 15th – complete the beanie. Demonstration on knitting a beanie in the round for the future.

Cost $60 including supplies

 

ADVANCED - Double Knitting

This class is for competent knitters who'd like to learn a new technique. 'Double Knitting' or reversible knitting creates a two-layer fabric with knit stitches on both sides (ie., no 'wrong' side). The finished fabric is completely reversible, This technique is great for colourful scarves.

This class will go over two weeks. In the first session you will learn the fundamentals of how to create double knitting in a small sample piece. The second session will be to regroup for trouble shooting and collaboration on your item.

2 x 3hr workshops

Saturday mornings  (Part 1) May 2nd and  (Part 2) May 9th 9:30am – 12:30pm

or

Tuesday afternoons (Part 1) April 28th  and (Part 2) May 5th 2pm - 5pm.

Cost $85 plus supplies. You will need:

5 x double pointed needles 4mm and a circular needle 4mm. A set of 4mm needles. Stitch markers.

BEGINNER CROCHET

Beginner Crochet 4 week evening course

This series of classes is designed for people who would like to build up their skills bit by bit in an un-rushed, supportive class setting.

Monday evenings for 4 weeks, 6:30pm – 9pm 

Week 1 April 20th – the basics: holding yarn and hook, chain, double and treble crochet

Week 2 April 27th – crochet a granny square

Week 3 May 4th – crochet a simple beanie

Week 4 May 11th – crochet a simple hand warmer/mitten

Cost $120 including supplies (patterns, yarn, hook)

 

Beginner Crochet 3 week Saturday afternoon course

For absolute beginners:

Saturday afternoons for 3 weeks: 1pm - 3pm

Week 1 March 14th – the basics: holding yarn and hook, chain, double and treble crochet

Week 2 March 20th – crochet a granny square

Week 3 March 28th – crochet a simple beanie

Cost $90 including supplies (patterns, yarn, hook)

 

Beginner Crochet class – the basics

This class is for absolute beginners.

Learn the basics: holding yarn and hook, chain, and the basic stitches: double and treble crochet

Thursday 9:30am – 12:30pm 

April 16th  or  May 7th

Cost $45 including supplies

 

Beginner Crochet class – crochet a granny square

This class is a good follow-on class from the Basics class, or for people who have crocheted before but a long time ago and would like to boost their confidence with a refresher and learn to read a pattern.

Learn how to crochet a classic granny square.

Thursday 9:30am – 12:30pm

April 23rd  or  May 13th

Cost $45 including supplies

 

Beyond Beginner - Crochet the Autumn Skies Infinity Cowl

For adventurous beginner crocheters who know the basics.... join the crochet crowd for a two part class and learn to crochet the beautiful Infinity Skies cowl.

Cost: $60 plus supplies (2 balls of Patons Sierra or similar 8ply and a suitable hook).

Week 1: Wednesday March 18th 9:30am- 12:30pm

Week 2: Wednesday March 25th 9:30am- 12:30pm

or

Week 1: Wednesday April 29th  9:30am- 12:30pm

Week 2: Wednesday May 6th 9:30am- 12:30pm

or

Week 1: Wednesday June 3rd   9:30am- 12:30pm

Beyond Beginner - Spice of Life weekday Crochet Along!

Based on the popularity of last year's Spice of Life CAL here is a daytime version for those who prefer to learn in a small group, stress free and enjoyable environment. This class will have a teacher to show you the ropes.

For adventurous beginner crocheters who know the basics, this class will go for 6 weeks and you will learn the stitches for the Spice of Life blanket.

This CAL will run on Mondays for 6 weeks from 10am – 12pm.

Week 1: April 20

Week 2: April 27

Week 3: May 4

Week 4: May 11

Week 5: May 18

Week 6: May 25

 

Cost: $120 for the 6 weeks, plus supplies. This is a great stash buster for your 8ply yarn, you will need 13 different colours plus a border. This takes 100gm balls of DK acrylic or 25 x 50gm balls of pure wool.

 

 

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Cancellations less than 48 hours from the class will not be refunded. 

March Yarns will provide a full refund if the shop cancels the class.

Classes and workshops will be repeated so if you do not get a place in the class that you'd like please put your name on a waiting list and we'll contact you if a place becomes available and when we schedule the next class.
